Esko holds a master's degree in Corporate Environmental Management from the University of Jyväskylä. His master's thesis "Current state and future perspectives of biochar applications in Finland" was published in February 2018. In August of the same year, Esko has started as a PhD student at the University of Jyväskylä and is working on a foresight study related to the market development of biochar applications and market.


The aim of his research is to increase the understanding of key factors, market trends and drivers that will shape the biochar market in the future. In addition, the research will fill existing knowledge gaps related to the economic potential and key driving factors of the biochar market.


In addition to the doctoral studies, Esko is studying a second master's degree in Environmental Policy and Law at the University of Eastern Finland. He is also a member of JYU.Wisdom - a transdisciplinary research community cooperating with decision makers, which is focused on resource wisdom, circular economy and sustainable use of the natural resources.


Biochar offers a unique and challenging opportunity to research a field, which has the potential to become a significant industry in the future. Having background in corporate environmental management, law and policy, Esko is looking forward to contributing to the development of the biochar industry.
